Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi to Cao Bang City

Pickup is usually early in the morning from your hotel in Hanoi. The drive north passes through Bac Kan province before entering Cao Bang, with a lunch stop along the way.

The scenery builds slowly: rolling foothills, a few tunnels, then a long stretch where karst peaks begin rising in the distance. By late afternoon you arrive in Cao Bang City, drop your bags at the hotel, and have the evening free to wander the night market.

Day 1 is mostly transit. If you have already been in Vietnam for a few days and want to skip it, take an overnight sleeper bus instead and meet the jeep in Cao Bang City on the morning of Day 2. Both options work equally well.

Day 2: Ban Gioc Waterfall and Nguom Ngao Cave

This is the headline day. After breakfast, you cross Ma Phuc Pass, a worthwhile photo stop in clear weather, and continue northeast through Trung Khanh district. The road follows the bends of the Quay Son River, where the water turns an almost unreal turquoise in the dry season.

Typical stops include:

  • Ban Gioc Waterfall for 1.5 to 2 hours, including a bamboo raft ride if it is running
  • Nguom Ngao Cave, a 2-kilometer walk-through cave with striking stalactites and decent lighting
  • Khuoi Ky stone village for late-afternoon coffee or a homestay check-in

If you are spending the night at Ban Gioc or Khuoi Ky, stay until sunset, which is when the waterfall genuinely empties of crowds. If you are heading back to Cao Bang City, you will need to leave a little earlier.

If you want a private jeep with a guide who actually knows where to stop on this stretch (the unmarked viewpoints are the best ones), have a look at our Cao Bang Loop tour page for current departure dates.

Day 3: Phong Nam Valley and Angel Eye Mountain

Day 3 is the quiet one: less driving, more walking, and more time with a coffee in your hand.

After breakfast, you head into Phong Nam Valley, arguably the most photogenic single location in Cao Bang. Rice fields hemmed in by limestone walls, a slow-moving river, and water buffalo going about their day.

From there, you usually drive to Angel Eye Mountain, where a hike leads up to the natural rock arch with views back across the valley. The trail is not long, but it is steep in places and completely shadeless, so plan for early morning or late afternoon.

Lunch is typically a family-style meal in a Tay or Nung village. Afternoon options include:

  • Thang Hen Lake for a swim or a short kayak trip in the dry season
  • Tinh Tuc mining town, if your route has gone west toward Phia Oac
  • A second pass through Phong Nam, if you missed the best light the first time

You overnight either back in Cao Bang City or at a homestay along the route.

Day 4 (Optional): Phia Oac or Pac Bo

With a fourth day, you can choose a direction:

  • Phia Oac Mountain (west): cooler weather, French colonial ruins, and a mossy cloud forest. Worth it if you have been sweating through the rest of Vietnam.
  • Pac Bo (north): the historic cave where Ho Chi Minh stayed after returning from China in 1941. More cultural than scenic, but the small museum and the stream area around it are pleasant.

Most travelers then drive back to Hanoi the same evening, which makes for a long day, or take the overnight bus instead.
